Kapa o pango! Aue hi! Ha!

The end of the All Blacks’ Haka was the signal for Kai to take the fish out of the fridge. The lemon should’ve done its thing already. He entered his kitchen, his pride and joy, and took out both the bowl of marinating diced fish and a can of coconut cream. He frowned at the can. He missed having access to fresh coconut, drinking straight from it, but sacrifices had to be made in order to live the life he had now.

“How’s that fish looking, honey?” his partner called form the living room. “Need help?”

He smiled down at his hands. No, he wouldn’t give up this life for anything in the world.

“No, I’m almost done.”

He made a quick job of finishing the dish —tomatoes, onions, salt—, washed his hands, and brought the bowl to the table. The love of his life was staring intently at the match, and both his cats had stolen his spot on the other side of the couch.

Kai put the bowl on the coffee table and sat on the armrest beside his partner, who sized him up with hunger. “Anyone’d say, with a body like that, you’d be out there with the All Blacks. Not cooking for me.”

Kai laughed. Their relationship was relatively new, and he hadn’t had the chance to tell the tale of his brief career in the New Zealand national rugby union team. “Who says I can’t do both?”

Footsteps pound the sacred warpath, many heads are sought, many slaves are sought, this is the work of Tūmatauenga.
